Descriptions of HLT Trails at the Hart Farm

The HLT Trails at the Hart Farm are an extensive system of trails that provide long-term protection of recreational trails for walking, snowshoeing, trail running, and leashed dog walks. The trail system links to trails at the Fields Pond Audubon property. No dogs are allowed on Fields Pond Audubon trails.

  • Bates Pocket Field trails (2.30 miles): This loop trail leaves the main parking lot and traverses the main farm field and the five northerly pocket fields. This trail is a beautiful walk along field edges and mixed species of oak, white pine, birch, and ash trees. Strenuous rating for the average hiker due to elevation change.

  • Fields Pond Connector trail (0.25 miles): This trail connects the Hart Farm trails to the Fields Pond Audubon property trails. No dogs are allowed on Fields Pond Audubon trails. Difficult rating for the average hiker.

  • Bates Farm Homestead trail (0.15 miles): This trail leaves the Bates Road parking area and provides easy access to the historic Bates Farm homestead location and the adjacent mixed hardwood forests. This trail begins at a 12-foot walking bridge over a picturesque stream. Easy rating for the average hiker.

  • Shelterwood trail loop (1.10 miles): This trail leaves the Fields Pond Connector trail, passes along a deep ravine between the Hart Farm property and the Fields Pond Audubon property, and loops around a mixed forest of white pine and hemlock. Strenuous rating for the average hiker.
